Breaking Ground for Colony Park Healthcare
On May 16, Central Health broke ground on its 2.3-acre, 34,000-square-foot Colony Park Health & Wellness Center at 6420 Helen Miller View. This new comprehensive healthcare and community services facility will provide critical resources to more than 20,000 area residents when it is projected to open in summer 2027. It will also serve as an anchor for the Loyola Town Center, a planned commercial, retail and residential district at one of the main entrances of the development.
“This groundbreaking is about keeping a promise to this community,” said Dr. Pat Lee, Central Health president and CEO. “Colony Park residents and leaders have long called for a stronger health care presence close to home, and this center is a direct result of that advocacy. We’re proud to help bring this vision to life, as part of our mission to build a health system that is more accessible, more connected, and more responsive to the people we serve.”
The new center will offer primary, dental and behavioral health care, an on-site and drive-thru pharmacy, lab services, wellness and prevention programs, and other community resources and enrollment services.
Check Out the Library on the Austin Bond Ballot
For the past several months, Colony Park community leaders have attended many Bond Election Advisory Task Force and Austin City Council meetings to strongly advocate for additional City facilities and resources, including a new branch library, to be included on a 2026 Bond Election Proposition. At its July 30 meeting, Council voted to include a bond election proposition for parks and libraries that includes funding for the planning of a new Colony Park branch library.
This new library would not only serve Colony Park and adjacent neighborhoods, but it would also provide invaluable resources for residents along the entire Eastern Crescent and those east of US 183. In addition to giving regional residents a place to check out books, A/V materials and more while offering programming like storytelling, ESL classes and workshops, the library could also host information sessions from multiple City departments and serve as a voting venue.
The election is Tuesday, Nov. 3 with early voting scheduled from Monday, Oct. 19 through Friday, Oct. 30.
Street Spotlight: Helen Miller View
The Colony Park development will include the construction of significant infrastructure, including several new roads, which are named after influential and impactful people in Austin, particularly those in the Colony Park and Lakeside areas. These namesakes have showcased their commitment and love for the community through acts of service, leadership, advocacy, or support. Periodically, we will spotlight the background of the new street namesakes, starting with Ms. Helen Miller.
Helen Miller View is the first new roadway built in the Colony Park development. It connects Loyola Lane with the upcoming Central Health site and the future Barbara Scott Plaza along the future central park.
An original Austinite and proud graduate of Austin public schools, Helen Miller has been a dedicated community advocate for decades. She has served as Vice President of the Colony Park Neighborhood Association for more than 10 years, helping lead neighborhood initiatives and amplify resident voices.
For the past 21 years, Ms. Miller has been an active member of various Austin Independent School District (AISD) Campus Advisory committees, currently serving on the committees for both LBJ High School and the AISD Alternative Learning Center.
Ms. Miller is especially proud of the work accomplished through the Colony Park master plan, and she is deeply grateful for the collaborative efforts that brought a much-needed swimming pool to the community—a project close to her heart and a gift for the children for whom she tirelessly advocates
What’s Happening with the Utility Lines Along Loyola Lane?
Beginning in July, crews began construction to replace the existing overhead electrical and telecommunications lines with buried utility lines along Loyola Lane between Colony Loop Drive and Wentworth Drive. This work is expected to be completed early next year, weather permitting. This effort has resulted in periodic traffic delays as one west-bound traffic lane is blocked for the crews to safely conduct the necessary work.
The burying of these utility line is a significant step in enhancing the infrastructure for Colony Park and surrounding neighborhoods and will help improve service reliability and public safety for the area. This work is part of Austin Energy’s policy to replace overhead utility lines with underground lines at strategic locations. In this case, the funding for this effort comes not only from the City but also from a Community Development Block Grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
